Clubs for Kids

Here is a short list of national groups and associations for young people. None of them require previous experience on the water and all are bound by strict safety codes.

Association of Sea Training Organisations (ASTO)

A group of offshore vessels ranging from Thames barges to four masted schooners and square rigged ships. Many take part in the Tall Ships races. There are places for young people on all of them .

British Schools Dinghy Racing Association

The BSDRA organise sailing competition between schools and colleges.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme

Water sports are included in the awards for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award

National Schools Sailing Association

The NSSA organises racing for school children across the country including regional championships and a splendid National Regatta.

Outward Bound Trust

Adventure training for organised groups with a sea base at Aberdovey. Work with the Outward Bound Trust counts towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold

Scouts and Guides

Scouts, Guides and Explorers have many opportunities for water sports including canoeing, dinghy sailing and offshore sailing.

Sea Cadets

National youth organisation for boys and girls – a youth wing of the Royal Navy. Youngsters learn many technical and nautical skills, and enjoy small boats, often far from the sea. Opportunities to sail aboard the square rigged ship TS Royalist, and to fly in Navy helicopters.

Sea Scouts

A branch of the Scouting organisation largely involved with water sports.

Sea Rangers

An organisation for girls between 10 and 21 with lots of fun stuff including sailing training run on Navy Lines complete with smart uniforms.
